Siem Reap, Cambodge, October 2000

Siem Reap means Victory over Siam, refering to an ancient war between the Khmer people of what is today Cambodia and the Siamese of what is now Thailand.  Siem Reap is the second largest City in Cambodia and the largest in the north.  It lies in the middle of a very flat area in the northern part of Cambodia.  All the borders in the north are mountainous, defining one large watershed that drains yearly upon Siem Ream, flooding the lake and the area around the city of Siem Reapp0000610.jpg (84388 bytes)

Our hotel in Siem Reap, the Angkor Hotel was nice and new.

Dirt roads are the norm in the Siem Reap area, this is National Highway #6.

This road was due to be paved by the French soon.

The Siem Reap area is home to Angkor Wat, this was our first excited glimpse at this marvelous compound.

Some of the victims of the Pol Pot regime at the killing fields temple near Siem Reap, Cambodge.  The bones were recovered from the fields adjacent to the temple, where prayer for the victims is ceaseless.

"The mountain" is a lone knoll that rises some 700 feet above water in the dry season.  In the wet season, the floating village attaches to one side of it.  In the dry season, the town moves out a few kilometers to the edge of the lake.
