Bridge over the River Kwai 

In Thailand, the river Kwai is pronounced as "quack" without the "ck".  p0001276.jpg (281043 bytes)

This is the allied graveyard in Kanchanaburi, Thailand for British, Australian and Dutch P.O.W.'s that died while working on the Siam-Burma railway under subhuman conditions at the hand of the Imperial Japanese Army.  The American casualties were brought home.

The present day steel railroad trestle lies about 500 yards upstream of the remnants of the original bridge built of wood and bamboo with P.O.W. labor.  This bridge is part of the Death Railway and was bombed by the allies and rebuilt during the course of WWII.

Even though this bridge actually crosses the Mae Klong river, the Movie producers liked the name "Bridge over the river Kwai.

The Kwai Noi flows close to the railway for a great length, but the death railway never crosses it.
